How To Use A Silky Saw, Pull Not Push

A Silky Saw is a high-quality folding saw that is known for its sharp teeth and efficient cutting.

Here’s how to properly use it:

1. Opening the Saw:

  • Hold the handle and unlock the saw by releasing the safety latch or clasp (if present).
  • Gently pull the blade out from its handle. Silky saws typically have a smooth folding mechanism that allows the blade to extend fully.
  • Ensure the blade is securely locked in place before using it.

2. Holding the Saw:

  • Grip the handle firmly with one hand. If the saw has a non-slip grip, make sure your hand is positioned so that your fingers are not in the path of the blade.
  • Keep your other hand away from the blade, as the teeth are very sharp.

3. Choosing the Right Angle:

  • Position the blade at about a 45-degree angle to the wood. This angle allows the teeth to engage the wood more efficiently.
  • Position the saw in a comfortable stance, whether standing or sitting, ensuring that the piece of wood you're cutting is stable.

4. Cutting Technique:

  • Start with slow strokes to get the feel of the saw. Silky saws cut on the pull stroke (when you pull the saw back toward you), so ensure that you apply force during the pull, and avoid pushing too hard.
  • Use long, steady strokes. Try to maintain smooth, even pressure while pulling the saw back through the wood. Avoid forcing the saw; let the teeth do the work.
  • For thicker branches or logs, make multiple passes, especially when beginning the cut. Once you establish a groove, you can cut more quickly.

5. Safety Tips:

  • Wear gloves if you’re working with tough materials or want extra protection.
  • Keep your body clear of the cutting path. Silky saws are sharp, and mishandling can lead to injury.
  • Always use the saw away from your body and hands, especially when starting or finishing a cut.

6. Cleaning and Maintenance:

  • After use, wipe down the blade to remove sap, dirt, and moisture.
  • Apply a light coat of oil to prevent rust.
  • Regularly check the teeth and the blade for damage and sharpen them as necessary to maintain cutting efficiency.

Using a Silky saw is very intuitive once you get the hang of the pull-cutting motion, and it is an excellent tool for cutting wood while hiking, camping, or performing outdoor tasks.
