It was primarily used by the U.S. military during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and the early stages of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.
This 6-color desert camouflage pattern was designed for arid and desert environments, featuring a 6-color desert mix of light brown, tan, beige, dark brown, green, and black colors to blend in with the sandy and rocky terrain commonly found in desert regions.
The irregular splotches and spots of different colors were intended to disrupt the outline of the wearer and provide effective concealment in desert environments.
The 6-color desert camouflage pattern was eventually replaced by other camouflage patterns, such as the Desert Camouflage Uniform (DCU) and later the Army Combat Uniform (ACU) in a digital desert camouflage pattern.
However, the 6-color desert camo remains iconic for its association with U.S. military operations during the 1990s and early 2000s in desert regions.
